How to pay off credit card debt in the Philippines
Philippine credit cards charge up to about 36% a year (the BSP finance-charge cap) — roughly 3% every month on your balance. That's why paying only the minimum (usually 5% of the balance) keeps you in debt for years: most of each payment goes to interest, barely touching what you owe. The fastest, cheapest way out is to pay more than the minimum and target the balance directly.
The minimum-payment trap, in real numbers
Paying the minimum only vs. doubling it — tap any balance for the full payoff timeline:
- ₱30,000 of debt → minimum-only takes 2y 7m and ₱16,498 in interest; double the payment and you save about ₱10,296.
- ₱50,000 of debt → minimum-only takes 2y 7m and ₱27,497 in interest; double the payment and you save about ₱17,160.
- ₱100,000 of debt → minimum-only takes 2y 7m and ₱54,995 in interest; double the payment and you save about ₱34,319.

Snowball or avalanche?
With more than one debt, two methods work: the snowball (smallest balance first, for momentum) or the avalanche (highest interest rate first, for the lowest total cost).
